This past week we took a family trip to Tanaka Farms in Irvine where we tasted some of Orange County’s freshest produce. We came for the watermelon tour, but were pleasantly surprised to be able to try a variety of different fruits and vegetables on the You Pick Tour (I love surprises).
You Pick Tour
Baby D was loving the fact that we got to take a tour of Tanaka Farms in a tractor-pulled wagon. We got to see each crop and our tour guide filled us in on fun healthy produce facts. The best part of the your was tasting all the fresh produce. For each crop area we visited, we stopped to sample all the freshly picked fruits and vegetables. Come hungry, the word “sample” is an understatement. We left the farm with enough produce to make a healthy, nutritious dinner. We tasted organic green beans, cilantro, strawberry tomatoes & carrots. The staff at Tanaka Farms cut up fresh zucchini, cucumber, cantaloupe and watermelon for everyone to taste. Even though August is towards the end of watermelon season, the watermelon was still surprisingly sweet and refreshing.
Wagon Rides for Canned Food Drive
If you’re looking for a fun and healthy family activity, head to Tanaka Farms on August 28 & 29 (Thursday and Friday) at 1pm. They are holding a special Wagon Rides for Canned Food Drive. They’re teaming up with Ahtky Insurance Agency to help collect canned goods for the LA Food Bank, Families Forward, and South County Outreach. All you have to do is bring two canned goods per person (or $5 each) and you will receive a wagon ride around the farm.
Also, have you heard of CSA Boxes? CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture and it’s basically a box of fresh produce delivered to your home weekly. It’s so great to know exactly where your food is coming from. It’s a bonus to be able to support a local Orange County family farm. Our weekly grocery shopping list consist of 75% produce so I think the CSA Box idea is a great way for families to eat healthy and eat seasonal.
The freshness of farm picked fruits and vegetables compared to produce found at the grocery store is incomparable. Everything we tasted at Tanaka Farms was crisp and tasty. Take a visit to Tanaka Farms in Orange County for a fun, educational and healthy family trip. We can’t wait to do another visit to the farm for pumpkin season in October!
