I originally picked up these "Pooh's First Words" flash cards to teach Baby D new words and they helped a lot. The deck of cards come in pairs of nouns and verbs. Now that he's a little older he uses them to play memory. Memory makes it easy for kids to improve their short-term memory and speed recognition skills. I modified the game by adding a physical element. I placed the physical objects next to the cards and had Baby D put the pair of cards with its corresponding object.
I found these flash cards at Target, but you can find them practically everywhere.
I started small and picked out 3 pairs of flash cards. If your child is older you can add more pairs of flash cards to make it more challenging. The cards I picked out where "pot", "ball" and "book". I found all three objects and placed them next to the flashcards.
Baby D turns the cards over to find the match, and he finds "ball".
He then places the "ball" flashcards next to the ball.
He finds the next pair.."pot" and places the flashcards in the pot.
The final pair he finds is "book" and places the flashcards next to the book.
When he's found all the pairs of objects. I set up another game of memory but used verb flash cards instead of objects. The cards I picked were "bounce", "run" and sit. "Bounce" is the first pair Baby D finds.
And bouncey bounce he goes!
The next pair he finds is "run". He's excited about this one because it's what he does best-run around my house causing trouble!
See how happy he is to be running?!
